MY DREAM
TO SPREAD MYSELF WIDE. but never thin.
I believe in my work. I believe we live in a time when good journalism and good scholarship mean recognizing our peculiar zeitgeist and making novel connections in it. To that end, I’m always looking for experimental and interdisciplinary ways to evolve my thinking.
I have two ongoing projects in the academy. The first is an ethnographic study of New York’s evolving bar scene and how they are becoming more and more places of social organization rather than disorganization. Yes, I am “that guy” in the corner taking notes! The second is a philosophical analysis of W.E.B. Du Bois’ text Darkwater where I articulate his account of aesthetics as an ethics of racial justice. Outside of academia, I have a book forthcoming Summer 2020 with New York Times bestseller and CNN analyst Keith Boykin on the politics of a demographically changing America.
As a journalist, I’ve reported on a variety of subjects across different media platforms. These include the reporting of the viral Barnard College Public Safety incident which was viewed over 3 million times, and the reporting of Union Theological Seminary’s harmful asbestos abatement next to Columbia’s campus.
Finally, some fun facts about me. I strategized my way into becoming the unofficial world champion in the 800 meter dash. I once played in the same band as Ariana Grande. I went viral on Twitter for making pasta from scratch. I can do a backflip. While seemingly random, these happenings have made me who I am. More than that, I try to live my life in an auspicious manner that allows me to have outsize life experiences. The hope is that they’ll make me a better scholar and journalist, and this in turn will make me into the person you’d like to have a beer with, or go to a protest with, or…hire.
